16U Ignite Girls at Provincial Cup
LVC’s 16U Girls Ignite started off their official OVA season November 15th in Chatham. Seeded 9th in the Championship West division, the girls and their coaches Emma Armstrong and Brian Kuiack knew they had a tough battle on their hands. The girls prepared for the tournament with a scrimmage against Stratford and came into the day with tons of enthusiasm and energy. Their first game was against their sisters on the 16U Intensity and though they didn’t win, they gave them a great match. Next they met Defensa 16U, a top 5 provincial team, and almost took a set from them. The girls continued to improve as a team taking a set from the Hurricanes, the Tier 1 gold medal winners at last Nationals last year. In a thriller against Woodstock, the girls won the first set 32-30 and then took the match after coming from down 8-4 and winning the second set 25-10 with Teagan de Laronde reeling off 16 straight serves in the victory!
Ultimately the girls lost their final match to the Intensity, but once again it was a good battle with some great rallies that was great fun for all our LVC parents to watch. The goal was to stay in the Championship Division and through team work and tenacity plus great coaching from Emma and Brian they achieved that goal, coming 7th overall. It was a great start to the season for a team with 6 new players! Our two novice setters, Maia Dobie who also doubled as a power, and Zoë Kerhoulas contributed to some great hitting by powers Teagan de Laronde, Charlen Lee, Jesse Matton, right side Hailey Knox, middles Hannah Galati, Alexa Jesse, Alex Quint and Neisa Long. Liberos Stephanie Yakubowski and Maddy Armstrong made some great passes to help set up the offence and keep us in the game.
All the girls contributed to the successful day and we can’t wait to see how they do in their next tournament in Championship West!
